2. Introductory paragraphs
a. “Chilean education”
In Chile,
education is very unequal. In this country there are has 4 main types of
schools: municipal, private subsidized, private and technical, so the access to
education depends on your ability to pay. The problem is these four types of
school don’t give the same educational quality. Specifically, students who went
to private schools are more likely to go to university than those who didn’t go
because, in Chile, access to university is measure by a standardized test call
PSU (Prueba de Selección Universitaria or university selection test). We know
that chilean education is unequal, but why is this so important? Because it
generates the class reproduction, that is, the poor will continue to be poor
and the rich will continue to be rich.
b. "Immigration in Chile"
During the
last time, Chile has had high percentages of immigration from Haiti and
Venezuela, and that is positive for our knowledge of the cultural diversity but
not everyone has taken like this. In fact, there is a lot of racism and not
only by the people but also by the government. In this way, immigrants don’t
have as many facilities to adapt in this society. A clear example of this is
that some immigrants who have a university degree cannot access jobs related to
their profession because their degrees cannot be validated. This generates that
they begin to work in informal jobs, without any type of contract that ensures
their permanence. Starting from this, the question arises of how informal jobs
affect the lives of immigrants and how this is related to racism.
