Legalize drugs or not?

Drug use has always been an important issue in our society. Since childhood we are educated telling us how bad drugs are and how terrible it is to know someone drug addict. However, it is very difficult to take a position on whether or not drug use should be criminalized since, on the one hand, drug use has many counter-productive effects on people’s health and lives, but, on the other hand, people will use drugs that are illegal or illegal, so wouldn’t it be more logical to legalize them, ensuring that people consume certified drugs, accompanied by guidance on their use?

It is true and undeniable how terrible drugs can be in people’s lives. Its negative effects can have very terrible consequences such as the overdose that can lead to death. In addition, socially, they have very negative effects as they can destroy people’s lives, ending social relationships and impairing the ability of individuals to interact with others in real life.

However, people use drugs, and will continue to use them whether they are legal or not. Currently, drug trafficking networks are strong enough to interact with government figures and capable of doing a lot of harm to people, as happened with the case of Pablo Escobar, which can be much more terrible than drug use itself. The only way to truly end drug trafficking is to legalize drugs and to raise public awareness of their use. In my opinion, many times the anti-legalization discourse of drugs falls into a moral rather than a practical discussion, so it is important to be aware of the real pros and cons of drug legalization, which I believe is a much more viable option to deal with drug addiction and drug trafficking.

In conclusion, there is a consensus that drugs can have totally negative effects on people’s lives. However, the discussion proposed in this essay deals with beyond the consequences of drugs, it is about how a State takes responsibility for the health of people and also for their safety. In this sense, the legalization of drugs could be something positive since the State would take charge of their distribution and dosage and, with this, eliminate the problem of drug trafficking.
